Author Event: Lorna Milne
Author Lorna Milne will be at the bookstore on Friday, October 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm to read from and talk about her biography about Evelyn Cameron, a Terry, Montana based photographer and rancher.
Her book, Evelyn Cameron: Photographer of the Western Prairie, is the first step in fulfilling Milne's promise to herself. When Milne was a junior high student she searched, even enlisting the help of her school librarian, but found that there were precious few stories of women's lives. She decided then that she wanted to write and publish stories about successful women so that teenage girls would be able to investigate and, perhaps, emulate them.
Going beyond Cameron's copious diaries and letters from the late 1880s to the early 1900s for background, Milne brings to life this resourceful, hard-working, observant, artistic, adaptable Montana woman. She reveals much about Cameron's daily existence in the sublimely beautiful but challenging badlands of eastern Montana—from her ceaseless work as a homesteader, gardener, and rancher on a hardscrabble place, to her enjoyment of community celebrations, neighboring, and calling on those who were ill, to her "ornithological ramblings" and peerless photographs of the people, animals, and landscapes.
