Author Event: Elizabeth McNamer

Member-owner and author Dr. Elizabeth McNamer's book, The Case for Bethsaida after Twenty Years of Digging: Understanding the Historical Jesus is now out in paperback. We are hosting Dr. McNamer at This House of Books on Friday, 3 November, beginning at 5:30 PM.

Billings' own Dr. Elizabeth McNamer was among the first to join the exploration of Bethsaida and traveled there every year since 1988. Since then she has become a leading investigator and is on the Board of the Bethsaida Excavation Project. Every year, she has presented findings from the excavation at scholarly conferences around the world.

One could ask why Bethsaida is so important. The answer is simple: There is no other site associated with the historical Jesus that is better preserved than Bethsaida. Recently excavated, everything one finds at this site was present when Jesus lived.

Even more, there are few important sites for early Christianity. Bethsaida was the home of Jesus’ closest friends and possibly nine of the apostles. We know that Jesus himself spent a lot of time in Bethsaida. McNamer richly associates Biblical references and other sources with the archeological evidence, so much of which she personally uncovered.

Her book, The Case for Bethsaida, combines scholarly research and a deeply personal perspective on the meaning of this vitally important site.
