Chaucer Day

The second annual Chaucer Day takes place at This House of Books on Friday evening, April 27, starting at 5:30.

“Whan that Aprill,” begins the Prologue to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, one of the most beloved works in all of English literature, and one of the earliest works we can still understand without a lot of special training. Therefore, it is in April that we celebrate the life and work of Geoffrey Chaucer.

This year, we will feature a choral reading from “The Miller’s Tale,” organized and led by Dr. William Kamowski. Side-splittingly funny, The Miller’s Tale is a rollicking bit of work and one of the most popular selections from all of medieval literature.

Following that, there will be a demonstration by Doug McIsaac and members of the Kingdom of Artemisia of the Society of Creative Anachronism. In Wikipedia, SCA is described as “an international living history group with the aim of studying and recreating mainly Medieval European cultures.”

Finally, we plan to sample several foods that would have been popular in medieval times. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
