Tim Lehman

Tim Lehman, a professor at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana, is a warm and engaging speaker.

Tim's Up the Trail: How Texas Cowboys Herded Longhorns and Became an American Icon traces the origins of our myths about cowboys and the Old West. Lehman shows that much of what we think we know about the cowboys comes to us from dime novels that described the life of the cowboy as independent, adventurous, and heroic. Dr. Lehman goes back to the original primary records from the time the cowboys were actually doing the gritty work of driving cattle to market and he finds a different story. The scholarship behind this book is excellent, and it is presented in an accessible, engaging manner.

Tim's book, Bloodshed at Little Bighorn: Sitting Bull, Custer, and the Destinies of Nations, is a well-researched, eloquently presented, attractive narrative that embraces historical matters of great depth and breadth. This is not a book about tactics; it is, rather, a volume that deals with the larger forces of history. Yet Lehman retains a sensitivity to the telling details throughout.

You can find our interview with Tim on his new book, Up the Trail, on YouTube. Ed Kemmick is our guest interviewer.

Tim is a member-owner since May 2016.
