Author Reading: Cinnamon Spear

Cinnamon Spear has a remarkable story.

Her essay, "Little Woman from Lame Deer," details the social, educational, and spiritual challenges she faced transitioning from a rural reservation community to the Ivy League. It appears in a collection published by Cornell, titled I Am Where I Come From: Native American College Students and Graduates Tell Their Life Stories. The title of the book as lifted from the last line of her essay:

"You have a strong name, my aunt told me. Mokee'e (Little Woman), that was your grandmother's name...I am of the Morning Star people; I dance with and for the Wakinyan Opa tiospaye. Though I come from the sky, my heart beats from deep within the hills. At the core of my identity is the land—it is who I am, and I am where I come from."
